Birthday getaway

I had a great stay at Enotel Magnolia! The bed was extremely comfortable — every night’s sleep was restful. I also liked that the bins were separated for recycling, which made being eco-friendly easy. The spa facilities were excellent, especially the indoor pool, steam room, and sauna, which was a bit tucked away but perfect for unwinding. Staff throughout the hotel were lovely and very helpful. Breakfast was another highlight, with a wide, healthy variety including plenty of fruits, gluten-free, and lactose-free options, which was great to see included. The only downside to my stay was how my birthday was handled. I had informed the hotel in advance, but there was no acknowledgment or even a simple "happy birthday," which was disappointing. Small gestures make a big difference in hospitality, especially on special occasions. I had seen other reviews mentioning thoughtful birthday surprises at this hotel, so it felt even more noticeable that nothing was done in my case, which sadly took away from the excitement of the day. Overall, a very good stay, but the missed birthday gesture did leave a sour note.

Awesome!! But a few minor improvements needed

I enjoyed my time very much here. I loved that there was parking but depending on the time day of you came back it was often full (only fits about 17 cars), and you had to get creative with parking elsewhere (5 creative spots). If all the creative spots were gone then you would have to park ten minutes away, which luckily didn’t happen to us in early April 2025. I would imagine during high season parking would be very difficult, so don’t stay out too late with your car!! The location was not too far off the highway and offered day tours and hiking tours at reasonable prices on various days of the week. Their indoor pool is NOT INDOOR. It is only covered and is open to the elements, I actually think the indoor pool is colder than the outdoor pool because it is not warmed up by the sun. We used the steam room and dry sauna which was nice but they close early at 7pm which should be open later as people could use it after a long day of hiking! It was relaxing the one time we used it, the second time we just sat in the residual heat. Breakfast buffet is great and has many options, the perfect fuel for exploring the island!! One thing I would say I found annoying is that I often went to the front desk to ask questions and half the time no one would even be there and there is no bell to ring so I would say the service staff were not super helpful at this hotel.

To stroll through the narrow cobbled streets with some intriguing little museums, shops and cafes and a salty old port area is a real delight. At night the neighbourhood comes alive. The restaurants are packed to the gills and St. Mary Street becomes the meeting point for young people ready to have a good time. To enjoy the island’s wonderful flora, you don’t need to leave Funchal. In the outskirts of the city we find some glorious gardens such as the Jardim Botânico, Quinta da Boa Vista, Palheiro Gardens and Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, reached by cable car from Funchal centre. Some other interesting things to do and visit are: The Mercado dos Lavradores, a very colourful market of fresh products and handicrafts; the 15th-century cathedral; Quinta das Cruzes and the Adegas São Francisco wine cellars. There are lots of reasons to like the bustling port city, that despite being tiny, it has a lot to offer.
