Cappadocië is een historische regio in Centraal-Anatolië, grotendeels in de provincies Nevşehir, Kayseri, Kırşehir, Aksaray en Niğde in Turkije. Volgens Herodotus,[1] ten tijde van de Ionische Opstand (499 v.Chr.) werd gemeld dat de Cappadociërs een regio bewoonden van het Taurusgebergte tot in de buurt van de Euxine (Zwarte Zee). Cappadocië, in deze zin, werd in het zuiden begrensd door de keten van het Taurusgebergte die het scheidt van Cilicië, in het oosten door de bovenloop van de Eufraat, in het noorden door Pontus, en in het westen door Lycaonië en oostelijk Galatië.[2] De naam, traditioneel gebruikt in christelijke bronnen door de geschiedenis heen,[citation needed] blijft in gebruik als een internationaal toeristisch concept om een regio te definiëren van uitzonderlijke natuurwonderen, in het bijzonder gekenmerkt door feeënschoorstenen en een uniek historisch en cultureel erfgoed.
