Sardinië is het op één na grootste eiland van Italië en ligt in het midden van de Middellandse Zee. Het ligt direct ten zuiden van Corsica (dat tot Frankrijk behoort). De Grieken noemden het Hyknusa of Ichnussa (Ιχνουσσα), van het Griekse Ichnos (voetafdruk van menselijke voet) vanwege de gelijkenis met een grote voetafdruk; Sardinië dankt echter zijn naam aan het Latijnse Sardinia, zoals de Romeinen het noemden. In feite was de naam Sardinië al bekend bij de Feniciërs, zoals blijkt uit de Nora Stele, het oudste geschreven document dat in westelijk Sardinië is gevonden, precies in Nora, waar we b-šrdn = In Sardinië lezen.
