Today, it stands as an industrial hub on the Mediterranean coast, with its primary industries being metallurgy and chemicals, though it also boasts a significant oil refinery. Despite its industrial focus, the city also attracts tourists due to its rich history and unique experiences it offers. Originally, Livorno started as a small fishing village. However, it held great significance for the Medici family due to its strategic location, and they declared the port a free port from 1590 until 1860. This allowed the city to flourish. However, much of this development was lost during the Second World War when the city suffered extensive damage, particularly to its historic Cathedral and synagogue.
