Seward (Alutiiq: Qutalleq) is an incorporated home rule city in Alaska, United States. Located on Resurrection Bay, a fjord of the Gulf of Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula, Seward lies on Alaska’s southern coast, about 120 miles by road from the state’s largest city, Anchorage, and nearly 1,300 miles from the closest point in the contiguous United States at Cape Flattery, Washington.
With an estimated permanent population of 2,831 people as of 2017, Seward is the fourth-largest city in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, after Kenai, Homer, and the borough seat of Soldotna. The city is named for former U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward, who arranged the United States’ purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire in 1867 while serving in this role during President Andrew Johnson’s administration.
Seward is the southern terminus of the Alaska Railroad and the historic starting point of the original Iditarod Trail into Alaska’s interior, with Mile 0 of the trail marked on the shoreline at the southern end of town.

Day 2
hubbard glacier (cruising)
Arrival: 13:00
-
Departure: 17:00
Hubbard Glacier is a tidewater glacier located in the Saint Elias Mountains in Alaska (United States) and the Yukon Territory in Canada.
From its origin in the Yukon Territory, the glacier extends approximately 122 km (76 mi) to Disenchantment Bay and Yakutat Bay, making it the longest glacier in Alaska that ends in the ocean. Its face is more than 10 km (6 mi) wide. Before reaching the water, it is joined by Valerie Glacier, which experts believe provides an additional push that will eventually lead to the permanent separation of Russell Fjord from Disenchantment Bay.
In May 1986, and again in the spring of 2002, this separation occurred temporarily, creating what is known as Russell Lake. In 1986, after the fjord’s water level rose to about 25 m (82 ft) above sea level during the summer, water pressure eventually broke through the ice dam around midnight on October 8, 1986, reconnecting the fjord with the ocean. This outburst flood was the second-largest jökulhlaup (glacial outburst flood) ever recorded.
