According to a report by the Hong Kong Archaeological Society, people had already settled in Tsuen Wan as early as two thousand years ago. In earlier times it was known as Tsin Wan (淺灣), meaning “shallow bay,” and was later renamed Tsuen Wan. Another name, Tsak Wan (賊灣, Hakka pronunciation: tshet wan), meaning “pirate bay,” suggests that pirates once operated nearby. The area around Rambler Channel was also known as Sam Pak Tsin (三百錢), literally “three hundred coins,” based on a legend that pirates would demand three hundred coins from anyone passing through. In 1911, about 3,000 villagers lived in Tsuen Wan. In the 20th century, factories gradually moved in because of its proximity to Kowloon. After Castle Peak Road was built in 1917, motor vehicles could reach the town, supplementing access by foot and by boat. Regular bus services did not start until 1933. Early industries used the abundant local water supply to produce incense sticks, preserved fruit, and agricultural products, while post-war industries included metalware and textiles.

If you find Bali too congested, the Kuta area and its surroundings are a great alternative: it was here that the first wave of travelers arrived in search of surf, and they also discovered a paradise worth sharing. Despite the noise and the less prominent presence of Balinese culture compared to other areas, Kuta and its surroundings still offer a delightful experience. Legian Street is charming, perfect for purchasing souvenirs or bargaining with locals for a dress; the beach is ideal for surfing, and it's a sight to behold as it's always bustling with surfers; and the sunset is a spectacle you simply cannot miss. Locals throng the beach in large groups, many of whom are eager to take photos with you, play soccer, or simply swim; and impromptu bars spring up offering cold beers and crates as makeshift local bars. The sunsets are stunning and completely harmless. However, the local lifestyle here is less immersive than in other parts of the island, so don't expect to find a quaint market or a temple around every corner.
