Lautoka is the second largest city in Fiji, located on the west coast of Viti Levu in Ba Province, Western Division. At the heart of Fiji’s sugarcane-growing region, it is known as the Sugar City. Covering 32 square kilometres, it had a population of 71,573 at the 2017 census. The name Lautoka comes from two Fijian words meaning “spear hit,” said to originate from a duel between two chiefs in which the victor cried “Lau-toka!” (“Bull’s eye!”). The first recorded European sighting of the Lautoka area was on 7 May 1789, when Captain William Bligh roughly charted its coasts during his voyage to Timor after the mutiny on the Bounty.
