Day 10
lifou, loyalty island
Arrival: 07:00
-
Departure: 15:00
Lifou Island, also known as Drehu in the local language, is the largest, most populated, and most important of the Loyalty Islands (Loyalty Islands Province) in the New Caledonia archipelago, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean.
First sighted by the French navigator Dumont d’Urville in 1857, it was soon visited by whalers and traders and later became a destination for Protestant and Catholic missionaries seeking to convert the local population. In 1864, the islands were annexed by France, which designated them as an Aboriginal Reserve, as they were not considered suitable for extensive colonization.
The term “Kanak” refers to the Indigenous people of the islands. The native language of Lifou is Drehu, and its people are descended from both Melanesians and Polynesians. Nineteen different tribes inhabit the three Loyalty Islands, six of which are located on Lifou.
The current traditional high chief of Lifou is Evanes Boula, who is chief of 13 of the tribes across the three islands. He succeeded Henri Boula on June 13, 1999.
