Castries, with a population of about 20,000, is the capital and largest city of Saint Lucia, an island nation in the Caribbean. The district of the same name had a population of around 70,000 as of 22 May 2013 and covers an area of 80 km² (31 sq mi). Castries lies on a floodplain and much of it is built on reclaimed land. It contains the seat of government and the head offices of many foreign and local businesses. Its sheltered harbour handles cargo ships, ferries, and cruise liners.
