Day 10
lifou, loyalty island
Arrival: 07:00
-
Departure: 15:00
Lifou Island – known locally as Drehu – is the largest, most populated and most significant of the Loyalty Islands (Loyalty Islands Province), in the New Caledonia archipelago, a French overseas territory in the Pacific Ocean.
First recorded by the French explorer Dumont d’Urville in 1857, it was soon frequented by whalers and traders, and later became a focus for Protestant and Catholic missionaries intent on converting the local population. In 1864, the islands were annexed by France and Lifou was designated an Aboriginal Reserve, as the territory was not considered suitable for large‑scale colonisation.
The Indigenous people of the islands are known as Kanak, and the local language on Lifou is Drehu. The population is descended from both Melanesian and Polynesian peoples. Across the three Loyalty Islands there are 19 distinct tribes, six of which are found on Lifou.
The current traditional high chief of Lifou is Evanes Boula, who became chief of 13 of the tribes across the three islands on 13 June 1999, succeeding Henri Boula.
