Napier (/ˈneɪpiər/ nay-pi-ər; Māori: Ahuriri) is a New Zealand city with a seaport, located in Hawke’s Bay on the eastern coast of the North Island. As of June 2016, Napier’s population is about 62,100. Around 18 kilometres south of Napier is the inland city of Hastings. These two neighbouring cities are often called “The Bay Cities” or “The Twin Cities” of New Zealand. The total population of the Napier–Hastings Urban Area is around 131,000, making it the sixth-largest urban area in New Zealand, just ahead of Dunedin (118,500) and behind the Hamilton Urban Area (230,000) and Tauranga (134,400).
Napier lies about 320 kilometres north-east of the capital, Wellington. Although Napier (62,100) has a smaller population than nearby Hastings (68,900), it is regarded as the main centre because it is closer to both the seaport and the main airport serving Hawke’s Bay. The city covers 106 square kilometres and has a population density of about 540 people per square kilometre.
Napier is the hub of the largest wool centre in the Southern Hemisphere and has the primary export seaport for north-eastern New Zealand, which is the country’s largest producer of apples, pears, and stone fruit. Napier has also become an important grape and wine-producing area, with grapes grown around Hastings and Napier exported via the Port of Napier. Large quantities of sheep’s wool, frozen meat, wood pulp, and timber pass through Napier each year for export. Smaller volumes of these products are transported by road and rail to New Zealand’s major metropolitan areas, such as Auckland, Wellington, and Hamilton.
Napier is a popular tourist city, known for its distinctive concentration of 1930s Art Deco architecture, built after much of the city was destroyed in the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake. It is also home to one of the most photographed tourist attractions in the country, the Pania of the Reef statue on Marine Parade. Every February, thousands of visitors come to Napier for the Tremains Art Deco Weekend, which celebrates the city’s Art Deco heritage and history. Other notable annual events drawing visitors to the region include the F.A.W.C! Food and Wine Classic and the Mission Estate Concert at Mission Estate and Winery in the suburb of Taradale.
