Über das Reiseziel

Elvas ist eine portugiesische Stadt im Bezirk Portalegre in der Region Alentejo. Elvas liegt auf einem Hügel nur 8 km vom Guadiana-Fluss entfernt, der de facto die Grenze zwischen Portugal und Spanien bildet. Seine spätgotische Kathedrale, die auch maurische Einflüsse zeigt, stammt aus der Regierungszeit von Manuel I. (1495-1521). Die Stadt verfügt über ein Aquädukt, das zwischen den Jahren 1498 und 1622 erbaut wurde und Wasser lieferte und eine Höhe von 40 m hat. Mit der Abschaffung der Grenzkontrollen zu Portugal hat das Schengener Abkommen über das Aquädukt dieser Grenzstadt neuen Schwung verliehen. Elvas ist derzeit eine Stadt in ständiger Entwicklung. Aufgrund der kurzen Entfernung zur Stadt Badajoz leben die Badajoz Elvenses oft so, als wären sie eine einzige Stadt, in der die Portugiesen normalerweise in Spanien einkaufen und die zweiten die Stadt besuchen und ihre Gastronomie genießen. Elvas ist eine Stadt, in der Musikshows sehr präsent sind, es gibt Konzerte vom Coliseo Jose Rondão Almeida, sowie im Parque da Piedade, oder dem Republic Square im Sportpavillon, oder dem Park Aquädukt Amoreiras. Die Höhepunkte der Musik sind die Jugendwoche, das Iberische Meeresfrüchtefestival, die große Feria de San Mateus (die meisten von Südportugal), die Maimesse, sowie fast jeden Monat gibt es Konzerte im Kolosseum. Alle zwei Jahre empfängt Elvas das "Freedom Festival Portugal", ein Trance-Musikfestival, das das größte in Europa ist.
