Om destinationen

When you arrive in Funchal, you're struck by its vastness. Homes upon homes rise from the sea, blanketing the entire natural amphitheater that is Funchal. It serves as the primary commercial, tourist, and cultural hub of Madeira Island. The city's old town, La Zona Velha, still retains a lively local atmosphere and is the most fashionable spot on the island. Wandering through the narrow, cobblestone streets filled with quaint museums, shops, and cafes, as well as a charming old port area, is a true pleasure. The neighborhood comes to life at night, with restaurants filled to capacity and St. Mary Street becoming a gathering spot for young people looking to have a good time. You don't have to leave Funchal to appreciate the island's stunning flora. On the city's outskirts, you'll find beautiful gardens like the Jardim Botânico, Quinta da Boa Vista, Palheiro Gardens, and Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, which can be reached by cable car from Funchal's center. Other interesting activities and attractions include: The Mercado dos Lavradores, a vibrant market selling fresh produce and crafts; the 15th-century cathedral; Quinta das Cruzes; and the Adegas São Francisco wine cellars. There are countless reasons to love this bustling port city, which, despite its small size, has plenty to offer.
