In search of the Northern Lights

Over de bestemming: Reykjavik is geen doorsnee hoofdstad. Het heeft geen magnifieke gebouwen, een historisch stadscentrum of imposante monumenten; deze stad is veel meer dan dat. De IJslandse hoofdstad is anders, bruisend van leven en dicht bij de natuur. De ligging aan de Atlantische Oceaan, tussen twee fjorden en omgeven door een maanachtig vulkanisch landschap, maakt de stad, waarvan de naam letterlijk 'Baai van Rook' betekent, onvergelijkbaar bijzonder. De meest noordelijke hoofdstad ter wereld is de perfecte plek voor natuurliefhebbers en natuurliefhebbers. Omgeven door de zee is walvissen spotten een van de populairste toeristische activiteiten. De stad heeft veel open ruimtes: parken, voetgangersgebieden, een meer naast het stadhuis en het geothermische strand van Nauthólsvik op slechts 15 minuten van het stadscentrum. Verspreid over de stad zijn er zeven gemeentelijke geothermische zwembaden waar de inwoners na het werk samenkomen om te ontspannen. Andere activiteiten zoals fietsen, wandelen, paardrijden, zeilen en vissen kunnen allemaal vlakbij de hoofdstad worden beoefend. Naast al haar natuurlijke wonderen heeft Reykjavik altijd wel iets te bieden. Het is een kosmopolitische en dynamische stad vol musea, kunstgalerieën en gezellige koffiehuizen. Het nachtleven is opwindend en uitbundig; tijdens een avondje uit lijkt het alsof de inwoners de bierverboden van 1989 proberen te compenseren, en uitgaansgelegenheden blijven vaak tot in de vroege uurtjes open. Overdag is de hoofdstad een stuk rustiger, met zijn keurige, kleurrijke huizen, schone straten en een ontspannen tempo. Reykjavik wordt beschouwd als een van de schoonste, groenste en veiligste steden ter wereld. Verdwalen in deze stad is bijna onmogelijk: de Hallgrímskirkja-kerk en de Öskjuhlíð-heuvel zijn vanuit de meeste plekken in het stadscentrum zichtbaar en zijn essentiële oriëntatiepunten. Reykjavik is dynamisch, creatief, modern, gezellig en heel bijzonder. De unieke persoonlijkheid en de magnetische omgeving zullen je ervan overtuigen dat er geen betere stad ter wereld is.

Over de bestemming: Arnarstapi is een dorp aan de zuidkant van het schiereiland Snæfellsnes. Het gebied heeft verschillende oude en charmante huizen met interessante verhalen en staat bekend om zijn prachtige natuur. Het strand van Arnarstapi heeft een bijzondere aantrekkingskracht. Het heeft een uitgesleten cirkelvormige stenen boog, genaamd Gatklettur, en hier creëren het samenspel van spectaculaire golven en het licht van de zon een fascinerend schouwspel. Grote kolonies van de noordse stern nestelen ook in het gebied, en beide kenmerken maken het erg populair onder fotografen. Een oud paardenpad door het lavaveld Hellnahraun is zeer populair om te wandelen, vanwege de indrukwekkendheid van het omliggende landschap.

Over de bestemming: Akureyri is een stad in het noorden van IJsland. Het is het op één na grootste stedelijke gebied van IJsland en de op drie na grootste gemeente. Akureyri, ook wel de hoofdstad van Noord-IJsland genoemd, is een belangrijke haven en visserscentrum. Akureyri is een zeer pittoresk stadje met zijn ligging aan een schilderachtig fjord, eclectische bouwstijlen en straten die zich een weg banen door kloven. Breng wat tijd door met wandelen door het stadscentrum, bekijk de indrukwekkende kerk en Listagilið (letterlijk ""de kunstkloof""), de thuisbasis van een aantal kunst- en ambachtsgalerieën en winkels. De rustige gemeentelijke botanische tuin, Lystigarðurinn, is een bezoek waard, net als de verschillende kleine musea verspreid over de stad.

Over de bestemming: Egilsstadir, IJsland, is de grootste stad in het oosten van het eiland. Het behoort tot de regio Austurland en heeft een bevolking van ongeveer 2.300 mensen. Egilsstadir ligt op een vlakte langs de Lagarfljót-rivier. Het kleine vliegveld en de goede hotel- en restaurantfaciliteiten hebben van deze kleine IJslandse stad een populaire toeristische bestemming gemaakt, zowel voor IJslanders als voor buitenlandse bezoekers. Een van de belangrijkste attracties van Egilsstadir is de natuurlijke omgeving, aangezien het de toegangspoort is tot de belangrijkste fjorden van oostelijk IJsland: Seyðisfjörður, Reyðarfjörður en Vopnafjörður. Heel dicht bij Egilsstadir kun je twee spectaculaire watervallen bezoeken: Hengifoss, bijna 120 meter hoog, en Fardagafoss. De valleien en bergen (inclusief de 1800 meter hoge Snæfell-piek) bieden de beste omgeving voor wandelaars, vooral tijdens de zomer. Dicht bij Egilsstadir ligt het Hallormsstadaskógur-bos, het grootste bosgebied van het eiland. Egilsstadir kan ook een goede uitvalsbasis zijn voor een reis naar het prachtige Vatnajokull Nationaal Park.

Over de bestemming: Höfn, a small fishing town on Iceland’s southeast coast, is often called the gateway to Vatnajökull – Europe’s largest glacier. Surrounded by dramatic mountains, black-sand shores, and shimmering glacial lagoons, it feels both remote and welcoming. Colorful houses, a working harbor, and views of the vast ice cap give the town a postcard-perfect charm that contrasts beautifully with the wild landscape around it. The main reason many travelers come to Höfn is to explore the nearby glacier region. From town, it’s an easy drive to sights such as Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach, where blue icebergs float in a milky-blue lake and wash ashore on black sands. In summer you can take boat tours among the icebergs, while in winter the area becomes a base for ice cave excursions, glacier hikes, and – with clear skies – northern lights watching. Despite its small size, Höfn has a surprisingly good selection of restaurants and cafés, many specializing in local seafood. The town is famous for its Icelandic langoustine (lobster), celebrated every summer during the Höfn Lobster Festival with open-air concerts and food stands. You’ll also find bakeries, cozy coffee shops, and a few bars where locals and visitors mingle after a day of outdoor adventures. Höfn works well either as a one-night stop on the Ring Road or as a longer base to explore Iceland’s southeast. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to comfortable hotels, and there are several campsites in the area. Whether you’re driving the full circuit around the island or focusing on the south coast, plan at least a night here to enjoy the harbor views at sunset and wake up to the sight of glaciers glowing on the horizon.

Over de bestemming: Reykjavik is not your typical capital city, it has no magnificent buildings, or a historic city centre or grand monuments, this city is much more than that. Iceland’s capital is different, full of life and very close to nature. Its location, at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, between two fjords and surrounded by a lunar volcanic framework, makes the city, whose name literally means Bay of Smokes, incomparably special. The world’s northernmost capital is the perfect place for outdoor and wildlife enthusiasts. Surrounded by sea, whale watching is one of the most popular tourist activities. The city has plenty of open spaces: parks, pedestrian areas, a lake situated next to the city hall and Nauthólsvik geothermal beach just 15 min away from the city centre. Throughout the city there are 7 municipal geothermal pools where locals go to socialise and relax after work. Other activities like cycling, hiking, horse riding, sailing and fishing can all be enjoyed on the doorsteps of the capital. Aside from all its natural wonders, Reykjavik always has something to offer. It is a cosmopolitan and dynamic city full of museums, art galleries and cosy coffee shops. Its nightlife is exciting and outrageous, during a night out, it seems locals are making up for the prohibition on beer that was in force till 1989 and nightspots tend to stay open until the early hours of the morning. During the day, the capital is a much more relaxed place, with its neat colourful houses, rubbish-free streets and an easygoing pace of life. Reykjavik is considered one of the cleanest, greenest and safest cities in the world. Getting lost in this city is almost impossible: Hallgrímskirkja church and Öskjuhlíð hill are visible from most places in the city centre and are essential landmarks for orientation. Reykjavik is dynamic, creative, modern, cosy and very special. Its peculiar personality and magnetic surroundings will make you agree that there’s no better city in the world.
