Wanneer u in Funchal aankomt, staat u versteld van de onmetelijkheid. Huizen en meer huizen rijzen op uit de zee en bedekken het hele natuurlijke amfitheater dat Funchal is. Het is het belangrijkste commerciële, toeristische en culturele centrum van het eiland Madeira. La Zona Velha, de oude binnenstad van de stad, heeft nog steeds een levendig eigen lokaal leven en het is de meest trendy plek op het eiland.
