Peneda-Gerês National Park Portugal

Peneda-Gerês National Park, often called simply Gerês, is the only national park in Portugal, although the country has many other protected areas such as nature parks, protected landscapes, and reserves. It is located in the Norte region in the northwest of Portugal, spanning the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, and Vila Real. Established on May 8, 1971, the park was created because of its national and international scientific importance. Its goals are to protect the soil, water, plants, wildlife, and landscapes, while preserving their value for local communities and natural resources. The park also focuses on environmental education and sustainable tourism.
