Miranda do Douro (Portuguese pronunciation: [miˈɾɐ̃dɐ ðu ˈðowɾu]) or Miranda de l Douro (in Mirandese: [miˈɾɐ̃dɐ ðl̩ ˈdowɾʊ]) is a town and municipality in the district of Bragança, in the northeastern part of Portugal. As of 2011, the population was 7,482, spread over an area of 487.18 square kilometers. The town itself had a population of 1,960 in 2001. Known as the "Museum City" of the Trás-os-Montes region, it is situated 86 kilometers from Bragança and is known for preserving many of its medieval and Renaissance-era traditions and architecture. The town has its own language, Mirandese, which is officially recognized in Portugal, and it has cultural and historical differences from the rest of the Portuguese state. The town is located on the border with Spain, with the Douro River acting as the boundary between the two countries. The closest town in Spain is Zamora.
