Gargnano Italy

Gargnano is a town and municipality in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy. It is located on the western shore of Lake Garda. The municipal territory includes the man-made Valvestino Lake, which was created in 1962. The village's name first appeared in a document from 937 as Garniano, possibly derived from the Latin root Garenius. Passages from the Roman historian Titus Livius and inscriptions on tombstones attest to the presence of Etruscans, Celts, Cenomani, and Romans. From 1350 to 1426, the territory of Gargnano was under the dominion of the Visconti of Milan, and later under the dominion of the Republic of Venice. In 1866, Gargnano was bombarded by the Austrian navy during the battles on Lake Garda, which were part of the Third Italian War of Independence.
