Peniche, a coastal city in the central region of Portugal, is rich in culture, traditions, and natural resources. The town is partially surrounded by 16th-century walls. On the southern seaside, you’ll find the Peniche Fortress (Praça-forte de Peniche), a 16th-century stronghold that was used as a prison during Salazar’s regime and became famous for the escape of the communist leader Álvaro Cunhal.
