On the southern seaside, you’ll find the Peniche Fortress (Praça-forte de Peniche), a 16th-century stronghold that was used as a prison during Salazar’s regime and became famous for the escape of the communist leader Álvaro Cunhal. Peniche is home to magnificent beaches, among the most beautiful being Baleal Beach, Medão Beach, and Gambôa Beach. Peniche is internationally known for its exceptional conditions for water sports such as surfing, bodyboarding, and snorkeling.
