In 1995, UNESCO designated Easter Island as a World Heritage Site, with a large portion of the island safeguarded within the Rapa Nui National Park. Easter Island is one of the most isolated inhabited islands on the planet. The most popular tourist attractions on Easter Island are the Moai statues that stand on ceremonial platforms known as Ahus. Additionally, Rano Raraku and Orongo require entry to the national park. Two remarkable sites are the volcanic craters of Rano Kau and Rano Raraku. The quarry slightly inland at "Rano Raraku" is where the majority of the moais were carved, on a hillside.
