Ponza, Italy

Ponza Italy

The main centre of the island is the port of Ponza, near the southern end of the eastern coast, and it’s the seat of the commune. Other settlements include Guarini, Giancos, I Conti and Santa Maria in the centre of the island, and Campo Inglese and Le Forna in the north. The second largest of the islands is Palmarola, about 10 kilometres (6 miles) west of Ponza. It’s inhabited only in the summer months and is home to a nature reserve. The church of San Silverio commemorates the death of Pope Silverius while in exile on the island. Zannone island lies about 10 kilometres (6 miles) north‑west of Ponza and is completely uninhabited: even overnight stays are not allowed. It forms part of Circeo National Park. The tiny island of Gavi is just 120 metres (390 feet) off the north‑eastern tip of Ponza.
