Peneda-Gerês National Park Portugal

Peneda-Gerês National Park, often simply called Gerês, is the only national park in Portugal, although there are many other nature parks, protected landscapes and reserves around the country. It is in the Norte region in the northwest of Portugal, covering parts of the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga and Vila Real. Established on 8 May 1971 because of its national and international scientific importance, the park aims to protect the soil, water, plants, animals and landscape, while respecting and preserving existing human communities and natural resources. It is also dedicated to education and to welcoming visitors, with tourism playing an important role in the park’s mission.
