Kayseri Turcaí

About ninety kilometres from the heart of Cappadocia lies Kayseri, a city founded in the 2nd century BC, although the area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. A visit to the city takes you to the Citadel, built by Justinian in the 6th century, which today resembles a medieval fortress. Here you can explore the Medersa, the Huant Hatun Mosque – an example of pre-Romanesque architecture – and Doner Kümbet, a monumental Seljuq tomb. The city’s Archaeological Museum houses several fascinating collections. Nearby is one of the world’s most important bird reserves, the Sazligi Nature Reserve, where around 251 species of endangered birds can be found.
