The Cathedral of San Nicolas de Bari is typical of the severe Renaissance architectural styles in Spain and has a nice cloister with intricately carved doors. Alicante has some of the best nightlife in the region. El Puerto and El Barrio are among some of the liveliest spots in the city come evening but the Esplanada is more popular during the summer, as are the kiosks along Postiguet and San Juan beaches. With beautiful sandy beaches, a long waterfront and mild and pleasant climate this city has a truly Mediterranean air.

Malaga, the birthplace of Picasso, exudes art from every brick. Considered one of the oldest cities in Spain and Europe, this cosmopolitan port is buoyantly modern yet it hangs on to its vast historic past. The palm-lined Paseo el Parque will take you below Alcazaba, a Moorish palace whose fortified walls enclose fragrant gardens and an archaeological museum. The lofty Gibralfaro Castle crowns a nearby hill, with outstanding views of the sprawling city below. Also worth a visit is the Picasso Museum that, aside from an impressive artistic patrimony, offers educational activities and cultural events. Málaga deserves a good night visit: do not miss a good walk along the harbour where traditional fried fish is washed down with cold beer at chiringuitos (beach bars) and enjoy the illuminated Alcazaba, which watches over the city from Mount Gibralfaro.

At this important crossroads of civilization, Tangier has a magnificent, scenic bay that flaunts below its lush green hills and ancient avenues. As a meeting-point of trading and commerce routes to so many different destinations, Tangier has been indelibly marked by history with its sovereignty often in dispute. As any hustler will tell you, the Medina, old town, is Tangier’s most interesting sight. Tangier’s medina is a maze of narrow streets on the hillside above the harbour. Rue es-Siaghin leads downhill from the Grand Socco to the Petit Socco; side streets to the right are filled with shops. The main street of medina leads to Kasbah, the former Sultan's palace and the highest point in the medina. It provides excellent views of the ocean and the city. The gate opens onto a large courtyard, which leads to the Dar el-Makhzem Palace and the modern-day Kasbah Museum. The palace was built in the 17th century and enlarged by each reigning sultan. The carved wooden ceilings and marble courtyard showcase the intricacies of Moroccan craft-work. Tangier's Ville Nouvelle is a must for fans of late 19th and early 20th century architecture as it features many fine buildings from this time period. Here you'll find the Terrasse des Paresseux where you can look out at the spectacular ocean view that has captivated so many European artists. With the harbour before you, look across the water for the hazy silhouettes of Gibraltar and southern Spain in the distance Tangier does not leave you indifferent, you hate it or you love it, there is no middle feelings on it, you promise not to go back again or you get addicted to it. But if you stay there and try to acclimatise to its rhythm you will fall in love with its beauty. However, one thing is for sure, Tangier is one of the most vibrant cities in Morocco.

Life in Palermo is intense. People and buildings are tightly crammed into every available space and chaotic markets render the narrow sidewalks impassable. Lush gardens exist along poor narrow streets, and drying laundry resembles the festive banners of a public festivity. Stroll along via Roma up to Corso Vittorio Emanuele, admiring the squares and the exuberant cathedral. The Palazzo dei Normani is an extraordinary fusion of styles, its Byzantine mosaics are a reminder of the city's Golden Age. The ruins of the Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti stand around the corner, with its pink domes shielding an exotic cloister garden. The National Gallery of Sicily, housed in the Palazzo Abatellis, has a superb collection of paintings and sculpture. In the mornings, don’t miss the massive open-air Capo market. Most of Palermo’s nightlife occurs in the beach district of Mondello. There you can join the strolling crowds of young Italians sampling fish from seaside kitchen stalls and eating gelato.
