São Roque is a civil parish in the municipality of Ponta Delgada in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. In 2011, it had a population of 4,932 residents within an area of 7.21 square kilometres (2.78 sq mi). The parish’s origins date back to the 16th century, although the earliest documents referring to São Roque are from 1563. The Azores Archive states: "A few miles east of the city of Ponta Delgada is the village of Rosto do Cão... The country homes of a few citizens are delicately situated in this village, and the soil in the vicinity is better cultivated than in a large part of the island’s regions..." The parish church dedicated to Saint Roch dates from the 16th century and was modified in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was built over an older temple located on the cliffs. The original hermitage was constructed in the 16th century; Gaspar Frutuoso, the chronicler and humanist, was relatively silent on its exact founding date, though he referred to the 15th century.
