Sao Roque Portugal

Sao Roque is a civil parish in the municipality of Ponta Delgada in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. In 2011, it had a population of 4,932 people and covers an area of 7.21 square kilometres (2.78 sq mi). The parish dates back to the 16th century, although the first written references to São Roque appear in 1563. The Azores Archive notes: “A few miles east of the city of Ponta Delgada is the village of Rosto do Cão... The country homes of a few citizens are delicately situated in this village, and the soil in the vicinity is better cultivated than a large part of the regions of the island...” The parish church dedicated to St Roch dates from the 16th century, though it was altered during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was built over an older temple set into the cliffs. The original hermitage was also constructed in the 16th century. Gaspar Frutuoso, the chronicler and humanist, did not specify exactly when it was founded, but he did refer to the 15th century.
